American political leaders offered their condolences in response to news of Dick Cheney’s death, with George W. Bush describing his former deputy as “a calm and steady presence in the White House amid great national challenges.”
Bush wrote in A statement That Cheney would be remembered “for a distinguished, esteemed man” and that history would remember him “as among the finest public servants of his generation—a patriot who brought integrity, high intelligence, and seriousness of purpose to every office he held.”
Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming praised it. “Wyoming mourns the passing of Vice President Dick Cheney,” he wrote on X’s website.
“His unwavering leadership shaped many of the most important moments in U.S. domestic and foreign policy for decades. Dick will be remembered as an iconic figure who helped guide the course of history in Wyoming, the United States, and around the world.”
Lawmakers from other states also influenced the 46th Vice President.
“He devoted much of his life to serving the United States — from Congress to the Pentagon to the White House,” Republican Sen. Jon Husted of Ohio wrote on X. “He had an unwavering commitment to our nation’s security, strength and founding values,” he added.
“Whether as Vice President, Secretary of Defense, or in Congress, Dick Cheney was always proud to be an American,” wrote Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa. “His commitment to defeating terrorism ensured that another September 11 attack would never happen. He served his country honorably and faithfully. May he rest in peace.”
“I knew for the first time,” Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine wrote [Cheney] When we were members of Congress together and he was in leadership of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives. He was thoughtful, consistent, and an advocate for his beloved Wyoming. Our nation saw his leadership as Secretary of Defense, directing our military strategy during Operation Desert Storm. Vice President Cheney has faithfully served his country in every position he has held. “We will miss him.”
Former Michigan Attorney General and Congressman Bill Schuette of Michigan recalled serving with Cheney together in Washington. “He was a good man, a unique statesman, and a proud American,” Schuette wrote.
Robert Doerr, president of the American Enterprise Institute, a center-right think tank, noted the deaths of his former graduates. “He was a force in the conservative movement and had a profound impact on our country,” Doerr wrote.
The White House has not yet issued a statement. Donald Trump was active on Truth Social this morning, but posted nothing about Cheney’s death.
