A driver is in custody after his car crashed into the Chabad World Headquarters in Brooklyn

A car crashed into the Chabad-Lubavitch world headquarters in Brooklyn on Wednesday evening, and the New York Police Department is investigating the incident as a possible hate crime, officials said.

The incident was recorded on video.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said police were already assigned to a detail at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood when they heard a commotion at the building’s main entrance around 8:45 p.m.

When they responded, they saw a car hit the back door, reverse, then hit the door again.

The NYPD Bomb Squad responded and conducted a full sweep of the vehicle. She added that no explosives or other dangerous devices were found.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation.

At a press conference, New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani called the incident a “horrific incident” and “deeply disturbing,” and said that “anti-Semitism has no place in our society.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James told reporters that the incident occurred during the Chabad holiday, when thousands of people from all over the world gathered at the headquarters.

And cry

The Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey issued a statement on social media.

“We are deeply disturbed by reports of an accident that occurred tonight in Brooklyn,” the organization said in the statement. “Just minutes ago, a car crashed repeatedly at 770 Eastern Parkway.” “This building is not only a synagogue, it is also the global headquarters of Chabad and a beloved symbol of Judaism around the world.”
