Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the accident in a post on X, adding that the government had sent ambulances to the crash site. Local media reports said that the boxer was taken to hospital.
According to a statement by Olusegun Ogungbemide, spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps, preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle “was traveling in excess of the legally prescribed speed limit on the lane, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and collided with a stationary truck well packed on the side of the road.”
Pictures circulating on social media show the boxer getting out of the wrecked car, groaning in pain.
The accident occurred on a main road linking Ogun State, a neighboring city, to Lagos, the country’s economic hub.
“Anthony Joshua is in an undisclosed hospital receiving treatment for his injuries,” Lanre Ogunlu, Ogun state police commissioner, told the Associated Press. He added that he had no further information about the injuries.
Nigeria is the home country of Joshua’s parents, where he briefly went to boarding school at the age of eleven.
