Trump calls on Senate to scrap stalling tactic to end government shutdown | Donald Trump news

The US President called on Republicans to resort to the “nuclear option” in order to end the obstacle facing the Democratic Senate.

US President Donald Trump called on the Senate to vote to abolish the filibuster so that Republicans can end the weeks-long federal government shutdown.

In a post on his Social Truth platform on Thursday, the US President criticized the “crazy lunatics” in the Democratic Party.

“It is now time for Republicans to play their ‘trump card’ and move toward the so-called nuclear option – get rid of the filibuster, get rid of it now!” Trump wrote.

“We are in power, and if we do what we must do [end the filibuster]He added: “This will immediately end this ridiculous nonsense that is destroying the country.”

The filibuster is a long-standing Senate tactic that works to delay or prevent votes on legislation by keeping debate open. The Senate needs an overwhelming majority – 60 of the Senate’s 100 members – to overcome a filibuster and pass most legislation.

Senate rules, including the filibuster, can be changed by simple majority vote at any time. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate.

Since October 1, when the new fiscal year began, Senate Democrats have voted against advancing a government bill to expand funding for federal agencies.

Democrats have called on Republicans to reverse planned across-the-board cuts to Medicaid, which expands health care coverage for tens of millions of low-income Americans and prevents higher health insurance premiums.

The stalemate entered its thirty-first day on Friday. It is set to become the longest deadlock in history if it exceeds the 35-day period that occurred in 2019 under the first Trump administration.

Federal employees classified as “essential” continue to work without pay during government shutdowns so they can be compensated when they end.

As recently as Tuesday, air traffic controllers in the United States were told they would not receive their salaries this month, raising concerns that mounting financial pressures could take a toll on already understaffed employees who direct thousands of flights every day.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday that a federal government shutdown could cost the U.S. economy between $7 billion and $14 billion.

Trump has just returned to the United States from his Asian tour, which saw him visit Qatar, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea — where he held a major summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In his post on the Truth Social website, the US President said that although the trip was successful, the talks made him think about the issue of obstruction.

“But the one question I keep asking is how did the Democrats shut down the United States of America, and why did the powerful Republicans let them do it? And the truth is that when I came back, I thought a lot about this question, ‘Why?’” books.

The US President added that he believes that if the Democrats return to power, they will “exercise their rights” and end the filibuster on “the first day they take power.”
